Clydesdale Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee History
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee – Clydesdale is a renowned coffee-growing region located in St. Andrew’s parish – formerly the parish of Port Royal – at an average altitude of 1000 meters. It is nestled in the Grand Ridge, home to Jamaica’s largest National Park and Forest Reserve. The Clydesdale coffee region is located at the very center of the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee area, so we can say it is located in “the Heart of the Blue Mountains.”
The Clydesdale Estate was founded in the late 1700s by Dr. Colin McClarty, a British national who came to Jamaica for what he thought would be a short visit but fell in love with the country he decided to stay in. This was one of the first estates to plant coffee commercially in Jamaica. Following Dr. McClarty’s example and realizing the excellent quality coffee produced in this area, other farmers ventured into Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee production in Clydesdale Estate’s vicinity. It is from these beginnings that the Clydesdale coffee region evolved.
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Clydesdale Estate was first exported in the late 1700s and, because of the exceptional quality of the beans, has remained an important coffee growing region since. Today, the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Estate, although no longer in operation, remains intact. The Clydesdale Estate factory, drying patios, and water wheel can still be seen and continue to stand after more than two hundred years. Once a favorite getaway for honeymooners, the Clydesdale Great House, along with the factory, has now been appointed by the Government of Jamaica as a National Heritage site.
